Re: Closing/ ConclusionReply

The closing is the logical conclusion of the rest of the sermon, either for listeners to be something or do something. A common mistake many preachers make is devoting the whole sermon to one topic and then at the close, asking listeners to respond to another topic. For example, preaching on forgiveness and at the close, inviting non-believers to become Christians. Both topics are important and relevant, but if you spent the whole sermon on one topic, then listeners are more informed and motivated to act on that subject than another topic introduced in the final two minutes. For additional thoughts on closing a sermon, stop by a library and browse through Ch. 5 and Ch. 6 of "The Power of Persuasive Preaching" by Ben Katt, published by Chalice Press.
