Fred Craddock gives 5 principles for using word images in a sermon:
- The best images are drawn from everyday life, and are set in forms that the hearer can understand.
- The best images use language that elicits concrete responses from a crowd, for example, "the odor of burped up milk on a blouse."
- The best images avoid self-conscious and unnecessary interruptions.
- The best images use adjectives and adverbs economically.
- The best images are spoken in one's own language.
